In Ontario, non-emergency medical transport is paid by the person being transported, unless a plan covers it: WSIB after a workplace accident, auto insurance accident benefits after a collision, Veterans Affairs Canada, Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) for eligible First Nations and Inuit members, an employer, a private insurer, or a facility.

01

Does OHIP cover it?

OHIP covers health care, not the ride to get there: non-emergency medical transport is generally not reimbursed under OHIP. Check with your plan, and tell us who is paying when you book.

02

What does WSIB cover?

After a workplace injury, WSIB can cover transportation to treatment and medical assessments tied to an approved claim. Check with your plan, and tell us who is paying when you book.

03

What about auto insurance after a collision?

Ontario accident benefits can cover transportation to treatment after a car accident, as part of a claim. Check with your plan, and tell us who is paying when you book.

04

Veterans and NIHB

Veterans Affairs Canada can cover health-related travel for eligible veterans, and Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) covers medical transportation for eligible First Nations and Inuit members. Check with your plan, and tell us who is paying when you book.

05

Private plans

Some private and group health plans reimburse part of the cost of non-emergency medical transport, usually against an itemised invoice. Check with your plan, and tell us who is paying when you book.

06

How to find out if your trip is covered

The most reliable way is to contact the plan directly — WSIB, your insurer, Veterans Affairs or NIHB — before the trip. Check with your plan, and tell us who is paying when you book.
